KUDOS to our Colleges!

The following are highlights and accomplishments from some of our member Community Colleges... 

 

Montgomery County Community College Children's Center Earns Honors
MCCC’s Children’s Center has been named one of the 10 centers in the country to have an early childhood education program that is exemplary in engaging its diverse families. The recognition comes from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).


Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) formally unveiled their completed solar panels project on June 29, 2010 in the Urban Meadow at their Midtown site. Real time solar output can be seen by visiting www.hacc.edu and clicking on the Green Technology icon, and selecting "Solar Panels @ Midtown." The project was funded by a $15,000 grant from the Sustainable Energy Fund. Also, HACC’s Select Medical Health Education Pavilion has earned the U.S. Green Building Council’s Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) designation for the use of sustainable best practices. The Health Education Pavilion houses HACC’s rapidly growing health careers program.

New Book Prepares Students for Success in College & Beyond
Montgomery County Community College Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Steady Moono, of Collegeville, recently introduced a new book he co-authored, Thriving in the Community College & Beyond
Strategies for Academic Success and Personal Development, during a book signing event held at the College’s Central Campus, Blue Bell, Pa. The purpose of the book is to help students make a smooth transition to college and to equip them with strategies for success on campus and in their careers. While the target audience is community college students, the content is relevant to anyone attending or planning to attend college, including high school students. CCAC team wins second innovation award
Group developed online student survey
A team at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) that developed a system to effectively survey students online has won a second award for innovation.
CCAC’s Survey of Student Opinion (SOSO) team has been recognized as one of 50 Innovation of the Year Award winners by the League for Innovation. The group also won a CCAC President’s Innovation Award in 2009. Read the full announcement here.

Montgomery County Community College Children’s Center Recognized for Work in Engaging Diverse Families
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) recently named Montgomery County Community College’s Children Center as one of 10 centers in the country to have an early childhood education program that is exemplary in engaging its diverse families. NAEYC’s mission with this project, Engaging Diverse Families, is to learn how excellent early childhood education programs are effectively engaging diverse families and to share this information with other programs struggling to start and sustain family engagement practices. Through its 167-acre main campus located in Nanticoke, four off-campus centers and eight off-campus locations, LCCC offers students more than 100 academic and technical credit programs and noncredit career training programs in traditional classrooms and distance learning environments. LCCC has the largest credit enrollment and is the largest provider of workforce development programming in the county.

Enrollment as measured by Full-Time Equivalent students (FTEs) has set a record high for the third consecutive academic year.  The 132,440 total FTEs in 2009-10 represents an 8.4% increase from last year.  All of the 2009-10 increase is in credit programs.  Credit FTEs increased 11.5% from 2008-09 to nearly 119,000 – a 63.2% increase during this decade.
